The former Kerr Rug Co. building at the southwest corner of Ventura and G streets is slated for demolition next week, and the work will close some roadway lanes at the intersection for more than a week.

The building is coming down to make way for street improvements related to the California high-speed rail project.

Starting Monday at 9 a.m., the work will close one eastbound lane and sidewalk of Ventura Street and the southbound lane and sidewalk of G Street. Signs will be in place to direct drivers around the work area, and pedestrians will be able to use the opposite sidewalks through the area. The lanes and sidewalks are expected to reopen on Aug. 6.

Spectators who want to watch the demolition are asked to remain at a safe distance from the work.
