Coalinga High wins third state chess championship
Coalinga High School won its third state chess championship March 8 in the high-school section of the 2015 State Scholastic Chess Championships in Valencia, marking the school’s sixteenth state chess title.
The team consisted of sophomores Blake Wong and Paul Carmona and freshmen Brett Wong and David Carmona. Coalinga High School won its first championship in 2008 at the K3 Championship in Huntington Beach.
Coalinga Elementary, Coalinga Middle School, and Clovis’ Fort Washington Middle School also took part in the competition.
Blake and Brett Wong’s brother, Bryce, a seventh-grader, led Coalinga Middle School to second place in the championship, Rob Lopez said.
