California FFA state conference comes to Fresno State

Fresno State’s Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology is helping host more than 6,000 high school agricultural students and educators through Tuesday as part of the 88th California State Future Farmers of America (FFA) Leadership Conference.

Featuring the theme “Electrify,” the conference attracts students and educators to participate in workshops, motivational leadership sessions and networking.

Highlights included FFA Field Day, when students, faculty and volunteers administered 24 contests on campus April 23, including agronomy, dairy, grapevine, poultry and more.

Other events include workshops, tours of the 1,000-acre university agricultural laboratory, career development events and speakers, including FFA National President Taylor McNeal.

Fresno Christian online newspaper gets national Pacemaker award

Fresno Christian High School’s daily digital newspaper, The Feather Online, was one of 25 to win a Pacemaker award at the National Scholastic Press Association’s Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Los Angeles on April 16. It’s the sixth time that The Feather Online has won the honor.

More than 3,800 high school students competed for the award.

The Feather Online also won a Golden Crown award at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 2016 Spring Convention at Columbia University in March.

Fresno State supplemental instruction program in national spotlight

Fresno State’s Supplemental Instruction program won the outstanding program award from the International Center for Supplemental Instruction at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The Fresno State program offers one-hour study sessions multiple times per week for students enrolled in historically difficult classes.

Students work with peers and supplemental instruction leaders to gain a better understanding of the course material in an effort to improve their grades. More than 4,000 students attended the program during more than 25,000 visits.

The award is given biannually to programs that demonstrate exceptional evidence in promoting student success, student development and overall program excellence.

The honor will be conferred at the ninth International Conference for Supplemental Instruction in Kansas City, Missouri, from May 25- 27.

Craig School of Business receives $45,000 donation

Thanks to a $45,000 donation from Wells Fargo, Fresno State’s Craig School of Business now has its own student-run stock trading room, one of only four training labs of its kind in California.
