Clovis West student named delegate
A Clovis West High School student was named a delegate to represent California to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Mass., in June.
The purpose of the event is to honor, inspire and motivate honor students across the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists and provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.
Jessica Lake, 14, a freshman honor student at Clovis West, was nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, medical director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, to represent California based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
From June 25 to 27, Lake will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from deans from Ivy League and other top medical schools on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technologies.
“This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, executive director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Jessica Lake are our future, and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.”
Naval War College prof to speak at COS
A professor from the United States Naval War College will speak at College of Sequoias in Visalia, the college said.
Stephen Knott, a professor of national security affairs, will give a public lecture in the college’s Ponderosa Hall on April 7 at 7 p.m.
The college said the event is courtesy of the COS College Republicans and the Cultural Historical Awareness Program.
A question-and-answer session, moderated by COS history professor Stephen Tootle, will follow Knott’s lecture.
Knott will speak about his latest book, “Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance that Forged America.”
The free event is open to the public, and parking will be free during the event.
Students get free clothes for job interviews
Fresno State’s Clothing Closet program is a new initiative, coordinated through the Career Development Center in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, that helps students obtain professional clothing for interviews, career fairs and first jobs from donations that have been coming in since the program’s soft launch in the fall.
The campus location held its grand opening on April 1 in the Frank W. Thomas Building, room 103.
The concept was created based on evaluation of student need and a demonstrated interest by community members to support students with clothing donations, said Debbie Young, director for the center and creator of the Clothing Closet.

Foundation grants go to Clovis schools
Fourteen grants have been awarded by the Foundation for Clovis Schools that are designed to enhance Clovis Unified students’ health and lifestyle choices, Clovis Unified School District said.
From gardens and swim lessons to a mobile fitness circuit and equipment for P.E. classes, the grants totaling $53,548 will benefit 12,552 students.
“We are committed to partnering with Clovis Unified and supporting the district’s mission to help students achieve their full potential in mind, body and spirit,” said Foundation Chairman Michael Fennacy. “We are very grateful to Kaiser for coming alongside us.”
The Health and Fitness Mini-Grant Program specifically targets innovative, research-based practices designed to help children develop healthy lifestyles. With a cap of $5,000, the grants fund instructional programs, equipment and/or materials.
The grants were made possible by the Kaiser Hospitals Foundation.
