Fresno hosts state geographic bee final

Fresno State hosted more than 100 of the state’s top geography students in fourth through eighth grades on Friday.

The students were competing for a chance to represent California at the May 23-25 National Geographic Bee Championship at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.

They were selected to compete based on their performance in school-level geography bees held in November and January.

Competitors answered questions about economic and physical geography, meteorology, geology, history and more, said Sean Boyd, a Fresno State lecturer in the Department of Geography and City and Regional Planning who coordinates the event, now in its third year on campus.

Nishaanth Krishnar, an eighth-grader from Utt Middle School in Tustin, was the winner of the all-expenses-paid trip to the finals. He also received $100, the National Geographic book “The National Parks: An Illustrated History” and a medal.
