Cesar Chavez remembered at Fresno State ceremony

The 20th annual César Chávez Garlanding Ceremony was held Wednesday at Fresno State, a day before the former civil-rights leader’s birthday.

The event marked the 50th anniversary of the 340-mile United Farm Workers march from Delano to Sacramento. That march included a stop at Fresno State.

Speaking were Fresno State President Joseph Castro; Paul Chávez, son of César Chávez and chairman of the foundation bearing his father’s name; and Alex S. Fabros Jr., a Filipino community activist who was involved in farmworker strikes predating the formation of the UFW.

The remembrance was held at the Chavez memorial in the Fresno State Peace Garden. Singers and dancers performed as part of the ceremony.

Chavez was the co-founder of the UFW. He was born March 31, 1927, and died April 23, 1993.
