Reading Heart to hold 24-hour book drive in downtown Fresno

In an attempt to break a world record, Reading Heart will hold a 24-hour book drive to fight illiteracy on March 18 and 19 at Chukchansi Park in downtown Fresno.

The book drive starts at 3 p.m. March 18, and the organization encourages the public to drop books off until 3 p.m. the next day. Prior to the drive, the public is encouraged to donate money to the drive at Scholastic will provide four new books for every $5 raised.

Organizers hope to collect 500,000 books, surpassing the current world record of 275,000. Both new and used books will be accepted.

Donated books will be distributed through the Fresno County Office of Education in the fall. In addition to Fresno County schools, books will be donated to Marjaree Mason Center, Valley Children’s Hospital, Friends of the Fresno County Public Library and other organizations.

Reading Heart was created by Danay Ferguson, 9, of Fresno, with her family in 2014.
