Education Buzz: FBI Teen Academy applicants sought
High school juniors interested in a potential career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation will have an opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn more about the FBI’s role during the Spring 2016 Sacramento FBI Teen Academy.
The Spring Academy will occur March 18 at FBI Sacramento field office headquarters in north Sacramento.
Classes are free, but a limited number of spots are available. Each class features a number of topics, varying from freedom of speech vs. violation of federal law, the importance of making good choices when using online communication platforms, what is required of FBI applicants and the FBI’s domestic and international roles.
Hands-on experiences involving the evidence response team, bomb techs and auto shop also offer students the opportunity to learn about FBI tools and techniques firsthand.
Applications include an essay detailing why the student wants to attend and the benefit students may have from the academy for the student’s school and community, and a release form.

CalVet withdraws GI Bill approval
The California State Approving Agency for Veteran Education withdrew approval for 37 Marinello Schools of Beauty in the state because of the school’s announcement on Feb. 4 that it will be immediately closing all its campuses.
The agency is a division of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
“CalVet takes very seriously our duty to ensure our California veterans receive the education and training they are paying for with their earned GI Bill benefits,” deputy secretary Keith Boylan said in a news release. “CalVet stands ready to assist veterans through this transition period as they make decisions regarding their future education.”
Eligible beneficiaries may only use their GI Bill benefits at institutions approved by CalVet.

Collier to speak at Clovis college
In honor of African American History Month, singer, songwriter and activist Jimmy Collier will speak on Feb. 16 at Clovis Community College.
Collier, who opened for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., played at Carnegie Hall and appeared on “Sesame Street,” will give two presentations: 12:30 p.m. in the Academic Center Building One, Room 150; and 6 p.m. in the Academic Center Building One, Open Computer Lab.
The event is free and open to the public.
Fowler hosts rural teacher job fair
District representatives from several smaller schools across the Central Valley will seek new teachers for the 2016-17 school year during the Fresno County rural teachers job fair on Feb. 17.
The fair will be held in Fowler from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Worship Centre Church on Manning Avenue and Highway 99. District representatives from Kingsburg, Firebaugh, Kerman, Caruthers, Riverdale and Fowler will be on hand to interview prospective teachers, with several openings available across the county.
Kepler School plans fundraiser
Kepler Neighborhood School, a public charter in downtown Fresno, will hold a fundraiser on Feb. 20 to help the school move to a new facility in the fall.
The fundraiser will take place at The Grand 1401, 1401 Fulton St., from 6 to 10 p.m. Individual tickets are $50, a 10-seat table is $450, and a program sponsorship, which includes two gala tickets and recognition in the program, is $250.
The evening includes dinner, a silent auction and raffle and dessert auction.
Kepler Neighborhood School has been operating for three years and serves students from kindergarten to eighth grade. With more than 500 pre-enrolled students for the 2016-17 school year and a growing waiting list, the school outgrew its current facility.

Bulldog Pride Fund offers $16K in scholarships
The Bulldog Pride Fund at Fresno State is offering eight $2,000 scholarships – $16,000 total – for the 2016-17 academic year, including the ASI President’s Award, the Drum Major Award, the GSA Network Award, the Harvey Milk Humanics Award, the TimeOut Spirit Award, the USP President’s Award and two general awards to students who have demonstrated pride in the community.
Students enrolled or soon to be enrolled at Fresno State may apply online at www.bulldogpride.org. The deadline to apply is Feb. 29.
