Sunnyside students bring anti-bullying message to Fresno Unified elementary schools

Sunnyside High School students visited Greenberg Elementary School in southeast Fresno on Friday to deliver an anti-bullying message.

The Sunnyside students are visiting several elementary schools, intent on helping their younger peers reduce bullying, prevent new bullying problems and get along better with each other.

“We want to start young so we can change their habits now,” said Sunnyside junior Alexandra Snyder, a member of the traveling group. “They start learning from us high school kids, and they really look up to us.”

The high school students’ mentoring includes two 30-minute assemblies: one, geared toward kindergarten through third-grade students, features a puppet show, skits, poems and a chant; the other, geared toward grades 4-6, features a rap, personal testimonials, skits and poems.

All of the skits are written by the high school students, and each incorporates the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, adopted by Fresno Unified School District.
