Student competition encourages new technologies in Tulare County

A technology-based competition in Tulare County will have students analyze complex situations and propose solutions on Saturday.

CyberQuest, the competition for students in grades four through 12, gave the students three weeks to prepare for the event.

It takes place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Elderwood Room at the Tulare County Office of Education at 7000 Dove Ave. in Visalia.

Thirty-four teams of students from 15 schools from public and private schools in Tulare County are expected to compete.

Last month, team coaches were given access to a presentation scenario in which had students to use their history, science, language arts, drama and math skills to create innovative solutions to a challenge, CyberQuest said.

Students have been challenged to propose a transformative technology to a hypothetical group known as the California Technology Think Tank, CyberQuest said. Students were able to choose from several topics including agriculture, artificial intelligence, desalination, drones, transportation and virtual reality, or they proposed some other technology they were passionate about.

Students will have to demonstrate to judges how their proposed new technology will impact California over the next 20 years.
