Coalinga High School chess club wins state championship

The Coalinga High School chess club won the state championship at the University of Pacific last weekend. The school won a total of two sections of the State Grade Level Championships.

Brett Wong and David Carmona won the 10^th grade section, while their older brothers, Blake Wong and Paul Carmona, won the 11^th grade section. Brett Wong won his 2^nd individual state title for the second year in a row. Blake Wong finished in second place for 11^th graders.

Coalinga is the only team from the Central Valley to win a chess state championship. The city of Coalinga has won a combined 18 State Chess Championships ranging from primary, elementary, junior high, and high school levels.
