Fresno sixth-grader dies following collapse in recess
The Turner Elementary School student who collapsed during lunch recess on Monday has died.
The 12-year-old boy was rushed to a Fresno hospital on Monday after he collapsed playing basketball at the east-central Fresno school.
School officials said he had a pre-existing condition, which caused him to collapse. When paramedics arrived at the school around noon on Monday, the boy was unconscious and did not have a pulse and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, according to Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez.
Fresno Unified learned about his death Thursday morning and released a statement that afternoon.
Fresno Unified is providing support services for students and teachers on campus “as the community works through their grief,” district spokeswoman Amy Idsvoog said.
“Superintendent Hanson and the entire Fresno Unified family is deeply saddened by this morning’s news and our heartfelt condolences go out to the student’s family,” Idsvoog said. “The community is asked to keep the family of this beloved Turner student in their thoughts.”

Note: Fresno Unified spokeswoman Amy Idsvoog clarified Friday that, while the district first believed Monday that the boy suffered a head injury, doctors later confirmed that he did not. The original report Monday and the original version of this report both incorrectly stated that the boy suffered a head injury.
