Fresno Unified sixth-grader rushed to hospital with head injury

A 12-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after suffering a serious head injury while playing basketball at Turner Elementary School in east-central Fresno early Monday afternoon.

The boy, a sixth-grader, was playing basketball during lunch recess when he fell and hit his head, said Amy Idsvoog, spokeswoman for Fresno Unified School District. Idsvoog said the student had a pre-existing condition which caused him to collapse.

First responders and Fresno police were called around 12:30 p.m. The boy was unconscious and did not have a pulse, said Lt. Joe Gomez, but he was alive when he was taken to Community Regional Medical Center.

The boy has since been transferred to Valley Children’s Hospital. Idsvoog said Monday evening that he was in critical condition.
