These Fresno-area schools earned a spot on prestigious California list

More than 400 schools have been recognized through the California Distinguished Schools Program this year, including 20 schools in the Fresno area.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond unveiled the list Tuesday, recognizing 408 middle and high schools for their high performance and efforts to close student achievement gaps.

“An excellent public education has the power to transform lives, and I commend the educators and school communities who have dedicated themselves to producing exemplary results,” Thurmond said in a news release.

To qualify, schools need to have at least 95% participation in statewide assessments and may not have concerning climate indicators, like high suspension or chronic absenteeism rates.
