  • Walkouts continued a multi‑day pattern with students marching in different parts of city.

High school and middle school students at nearly a dozen schools marched in several parts of Fresno, Clovis and Madera on Friday, marking another day of anti-ICE walkouts in the region.

In Fresno, about 300 students walked out of Roosevelt High School, marching to City Hall before continuing toward the Fresno Unified School District administrative building on Tulare Street.

Fresno Unified spokesperson Diana Diaz said students from Yosemite Middle School, Duncan Polytechnical High, Ahwahnee Middle School, Fort Miller Middle School, Roosevelt and McLane participated in Friday’s walkouts.

In Clovis, approximately 150 Clovis West High School students left campus, marched to the intersection of Blackstone and Nees avenues, and then headed north toward Woodward Park.

About 50 students from Clovis North also walked out, leaving campus near International and Willow avenues. Their destination was unclear, but the group later returned to campus.

Clovis Unified spokesperson Kelly Avants confirmed that students from both Clovis West and Clovis North participated in the walkouts.

“We believe that our students are best served in the classroom, supported by their teachers and school leaders from bell to bell during the school day,” Avants told The Bee. “We also encourage our students toward developing thinking and their own voice through class activities and learning experiences appropriate to school.”

Avants said students have access to designated areas on campus for free speech and respectful self-expression during breaks or lunch periods, which the district prefers in order to maintain student safety and minimize the loss of instructional time.

“Recognizing that students might leave campus, we coordinated with local law enforcement to ensure they were aware and prepared to assume their public safety jurisdiction for students leaving campus,” Avants said.

According to police, no incidents were reported. Students at Madera High School staged a walk-out protest Friday morning, as well.

Friday’s walkouts followed similar demonstrations earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, hundreds of Bullard High students left campus and marched approximately 3 miles to Fashion Fair Mall. On Monday, students from Hoover High also marched to the mall.

Last Friday, students from Sunnyside High and Fresno High also participated in walkouts.
