Three San Joaquin College of Law students win scholarships

Three women from the San Joaquin College of Law have won more than $24,000 in scholarships this year, provided by the Educational Employees Credit Union and the Hugh Goodwin Bar Association.

Whitney Hendricks has been awarded a $9,000 Hugh Goodwin Bar scholarship for her record in community service. Hendricks worked at two prisons, two addiction treatment programs and currently serves as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor at Madera County Health Services. She received her masters degree in Criminology from Fresno State.

Jodie Howard, an incoming student at SJCL, is the winner of a $9,000 Educational Employees Credit Union Scholarship. Howard’s path to law school started 10 years ago, when developmental specialists were unable to diagnose her son’s disability, leading her to publish numerous articles in her struggles for her son’s educational rights. She is currently Director of Community Relations and Family Resources for the California Autism Center and Learning Group and sits on the Board of Directors of the Fresno/Madera Chapter of Families for Effective Autism Treatment.

Jacqueline Curry, a second-year law student, is the recipient of a $4,500 EECU scholarship. Curry, a single mother of seven, is the director of the Gazarian Real Estate Center at Fresno State, and says her purpose in life is to help others. She also works at the New American Legal Clinic at SJCL, and serves as president of the Madera Sk8 Park Committee.

All three women said that they hope to make a significant contribution in the community as attorneys.
