One of Fresno’s oldest high schools is getting a major renovation

Roosevelt High School, one of Fresno Unified’s oldest school sites, will soon get a second gymnasium.

A Fresno Unified spokesperson said Roosevelt’s existing gym has a capacity of 1200 people. The second gym will include additional courts and practice areas for training, as well as instructional spaces.

The 97-year-old campus’s new, 13,300-square-foot auxiliary gym will seat more than 900 people in its bleachers.

“We are extremely excited to add a second gymnasium to our campus, as it will provide more access to necessary facilities for both physical education classes and athletics. We look forward to this new space being available for our Rough Rider students and staff, and we are thankful to our community and our Board of Education for making this happen for Roosevelt High School,” principal Michael Allen said.

The project is funded through Measure M, a $325 million bond voters passed in 2020.

Fresno Unified trustees approved the bid earlier this month. Roosevelt trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas abstained from the vote, citing her residence’s proximity to the site and noting that she wanted to avoid “the appearance of any conflict.”

The bid was awarded to Davis Moreno Construction — the same vendor that was impersonated by a scammer who allegedly defrauded the district last February.

According to the district’s procurement portal, Fresno Unified listed the project’s estimated cost as around $15,400,000 on its notice to bidders, and David Moreno Construction secured it with a bid of $10,376,315.

The project needs to be completed within 438 calendar days, per the district’s procurement portal.
