Clovis Community College’s president Dr. Kim Armstrong is moving to Fresno City College as acting president, state officials announced.

Following Armstrong’s transition, Dr. Monica Chahal, vice president of instruction at Clovis Community College, will step into the interim role as president.

Armstrong served as Clovis Community College’s third president since Jan. 3, 2024. Previously, she was a vice chancellor at Arkansas State University Three Rivers. Clovis Community College enrolls approximately 13,000 annually and Fresno City College, the first community college in the state founded in 1910, has an enrollment of over 25,000 students.

Fresno City College’s president Dr. Robert Pimentel’s last day is July 31. He’ll assume his new role as the chancellor of West Hills Community College District at the start of August.

The statement also announced the departure of Fresno City College’s vice president of administrative services, Dr. Omar Gutierrez, who will be the chief business officer at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

Glynna Billings, the district’s accounting manager, will fill in for Gutierrez’s role as the district initiates the recruitment process for this position.

The district will open the interim vice president of instruction at Clovis Community College for district employees to apply in the next few days, said the statement.

The plan for hiring permanent president positions for both Fresno City College and Clovis Community College is unclear. The district didn’t reply to The Fresno Bee’s inquiry about timelines.

In previous conversations, the district spokesperson Jill Wagner told The Bee that the district Chancellor Dr. Carole Goldsmith will select the candidates for the permanent president position and present the finalists to the district board of trustees for ratification.

“We conduct national searches for all of our top positions,” said Wagner.

“I have full confidence in our leadership team and the entire district as we navigate these transitions and continue our mission of providing quality education and support to our students,” said Goldsmith.
