Clovis student posts weapon online, prompting police investigation. Here’s what we know
Police investigated a Clovis North student for what school administrators described as a “disturbing” social media post made sometime over the weekend.
The investigation was launched after Clovis law enforcement and the school district’s police department received information about the post made by a student. Authorities have not said if it included an image or what type of weapon was involved.
The school’s administration said in the email alert they are taking “appropriate action,” and police confirmed no credible threat exists to its campus. Clovis Unified and Fresno police did not immediately respond Monday to a Fresno Bee request for more information.
Clovis Unified spokesperson Patti Lippert said the school district cannot share information about the student’s age or grade. She said there are “multiple supports” from school and public safety available when a student shows indications of possibly being a threat to themselves or others.
“Based on the investigation into the situation the school became aware of over the weekend, we have taken any actions related to potential student discipline, student mental health support,” Lippert said, “and any other necessary steps to confirm the campus is safe.”
Lippert said resources and/or counseling are always available and continue to be so in the aftermath of this investigation. “Everything that should be done is being done to ensure their students are safe at school,” she said.
For concerned parents and community members outside of Clovis Unified, the district encourages every parent to have a conversation with their child about the risks of making inappropriate posts online.
“The consequences can be extreme regardless of whether the student considers it a prank or empty words,” Lippert said. “We do not treat situations like that lightly nor does local law enforcement.”
