Computer programming camp to bring tech education to Huron students

West Hills College Coalinga, the Coalinga-Huron Unified School District and the California Community Colleges State Chancellor’s Office are partnering to offer a camp for Huron Middle School students to learn about entrepreneurship and computer programming.

The camp will be offered to 20 to 25 middle school students in Huron from July 25-29.

Students will tackle projects like creating websites while learning how to get a job in the programming field.

“This is so important, because this field is a demand occupation across the state of California,” said Robert Pimentel, camp coordinator and associate dean of education services at West Hills Coalinga. “We’re trying to teach kids about math, science and engineering, and this is a fun way to do that.”

Students will go on a field trip to Bitwise Industries, a technology company in Fresno.

“We hope that they begin to explore STEM careers as they enter high school,” said Pimentel. “Allowing them the opportunity to explore computer programming and teaching them about business and entrepreneurship will open their creative minds to think about the possibilities for the future.”
