Which Fresno-area schools will reopen for fall classes? Here’s an updated list of plans

UDPATE: On Friday, July 17, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all schools in counties on the state’s coronavirus watchlist - which includes Fresno County - not to reopen.

Clovis Unified School District | The district voted Wednesday to give parents the option of traditional in-person classes or full time online education.

School starts Aug. 17.

Central Unified School District | Students will begin the 2020-2021 school year fully online, with the hope of transitioning to in-person during the year, officials said. More information can be found here.

A new option, Central Online Home School, is available for those who don’t want to transition back to in-person classes.

School starts Aug. 12.

Fowler Unified School District | Malaga Elementary and Fowler Academy will return to full-time in-person instruction, while Marshall Elementary will have an a.m./p.m. staggered schedule, officials announced Thursday.

Fremont Elementary, Sutter Middle School and Fowler High School will move to an two-day alternating schedule. More information can be found here.

Students can also enroll in the Fowler Virtual Learning Academy, which is a 100% online option.

School starts Aug. 18.

Fresno Unified School District | The district said it will announce its plans Friday. Some trustees and the teacher’s union say it’s impossible to social distance students, making it unlikely and dangerous for children to return in-person.

School starts Aug. 17.

Kerman Unified School District | On Monday, the district released a blended learning plan, which will see kids split into two groups with each group on campus for two days of the week.

The district is offering an online-only option that will have the same curriculum as on-campus instruction.

Superintendent Robert Frausto will hold virtual town hall meetings this week and next for families at each school site to get more information on how the school year will work. More information can be found here.

Kings Canyon Unified School District | School officials have released a plan for each grade level: Transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students will attend either morning or afternoon classes; first grade, second grade and special education students will attend school five days a week; third through 12th graders will attend on a split rotated schedule: two days a week, and every other Wednesday.

There are also fully online options to choose from.

School starts Aug. 12.

Madera Unified School District | Trustees will discuss school opening plans at a board meeting on July 21, according to the district.

Riverdale Joint Union School District | Preliminary plans call for either a blended schedule of two days a week, or a full five-day schedule. School officials are asking for student and parent input during a meeting on July 21 that will be in English and Spanish.

School starts Aug. 13.

Sanger Unified School District | Four options are available for students: Five-day-a-week attendance, two or three-day-a-week attendance, online learning with a Sanger Unified teacher, or online learning with guidance from parents.

School starts Aug. 20.

Selma Unified School District | Students will begin the 2020-2021 school year fully online, with the hope of transitioning to in-person during the year, officials said. More information can be found here.

School starts Aug. 11.

Visalia Unified School District | Superintendent Tamara Ravalín said students will have the option of starting the school year fully online or through a hybrid model with some on-campus learning and some distance learning. A planning guide with more details will be released in the future, Ravalín said.

School starts Aug. 13.

Yosemite Unified School District | The district is still looking at two different models for learning — including full-time in-person instruction, officials announced Monday. No definitive plans have been set, but the mode of learning will depend on local health guidelines.

Two home school/independent learning options are available: The John Muir Academy Program for kindergarten through eighth grade, and the Yosemite Falls Program for high school.

“Students can work under the guidance of parents at home, but also have weekly in-person or virtual meetings with the teacher,” the district said about the program. Registration can be found here.
