Fresno, Clovis restrict sports, activities over coronavirus - but classes continue

Fresno Unified Schools will restrict sports and other student activities but will continue holding classes on campus, officials announced Thursday at a news conference.

Clovis and Central school districts made similar announcements, saying sports were on hold, but classes continue.

Clovis schools put out a partial listed of postponed activities.

  • A partial list of these postponements through April 13 include:
    • All school and club athletic competitions
    • All Open House Events scheduled before April 13
    • All visual and performing arts music festivals and concerts/plays
    • All student rallies, assemblies, dances
    • The Janet Young Elementary Groundbreaking
    • Fundraising dinners and events held by school booster groups
    • The district-wide March 17 Career Technical Education Night, ELAC, DELAC, LCAP, and other large parent and community gatherings.
    • Outside organizations requesting to use Clovis Unified facilities may also be notified that the district is unable to accommodate their rental given the Governor’s directive

Fresno Unified communications officer explained Effective immediately - April 13, FUSD is postponing non essential gatherings including:

  • Athletic competitions and tournaments
  • Field trips
  • Camps
  • Visual and performing arts events
  • Assemblies
  • Open houses
  • ILAC, DILAC meetings
  • School dances
  • Award ceremonies
  • Other large community gatherings.

Classes are not being canceled, following the guidance of Governor Newsom. Ramirez echos Governor Newsom’s statement that “school is essential for students.”

If cancellations happen for FUSD classes happen parents will informed via messenger. Class and event cancellation updates will also be posted on the Fresno Unified website.

They are also limiting visitors including volunteers for medically fragile serving schools, Addcott, Rata, and the Adult Transition Program (ATP).

Most colleges have announced cancellations of events and classes.

Lucy Ruiz, spokeswoman for the State Center Community District, said the district intends to hold a special meeting at 5:00 p.m. Friday in the district’s board room at 1525 Weldon Ave. in Fresno. Community college districts are postponing large events throughout the month of March.
