Students looking forward to partying out of the country during spring break should be prepared for their plans to be canceled and to have to self-isolate due to the fast-spreading coronavirus, according to Fresno State officials.

Students, faculty and staff are strongly advised not to travel internationally, including to popular spring break destinations such as Cabo San Lucas and Cancún, said Carolyn Coon, the dean of students and acting vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment.

Coon said to expect flight cancellations, quarantines and border closures to happen on short notice, and a possible 14-day required self-isolation.

Anyone returning from outside the United States could be screened and isolated at borders and airports.

Coon said delays and self-isolation requirements could make students miss class.

Spring break is April 6 through 10.

Fresno State last week made the call to cancel some of its summer study abroad programs amid the outbreak, and to also bring home students currently studying.

The travel warning comes following Fresno County’s first confirmed case of the coronavirus reported over the weekend. The patient, described by authorities as an elderly man who recently traveled abroad on a cruise ship, is not believed to have any connections with Fresno State.

Officials have said the patient has a minor infection and a full recovery is expected.

While Fresno State officials warned traveling students, the virus has not caused any changes to classes or student activities.

“Consistent with other California public universities who have had confirmed cases in their county, we are not planning to cancel classes or suspend or modify operations at this time,” Coon said.
