Fresno State student Bryan Wood is one of 10 to receive a scholarship worth up to $100,000 from the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Bright Minds Scholarship Program.

The scholarship pays up to $20,000 per year for up to five years to complete an undergraduate degree.

“I began college courses at 14 and became a full-time college student at 16,” Wood said in a release from PG&E. “Missing first grade caused a gap in my writing education that led to years of struggles. These challenges have made me stronger, and I have learned to work hard, persevere and stay on task.”

The 10 students who were awarded scholarships were among 4,200 applicants in Northern and Central California.

An additional 90 recipients will receive $2,000 toward their college costs.

PG&E says Bright Minds has committed $3 million in scholarships since 2012. In that time, 400 students have been awarded scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $30,000.
