Journalism Day draws hundreds of high school students to Fresno City

More than 200 high school students from around the central San Joaquin Valley took part in Fresno City College’s inaugural Journalism Day conference Friday.

The conference featured workshops on topics such as news writing, broadcasting, photography, social media, what is fake news, ethics, radio and sports reporting.

The workshops were led by practicing journalists and journalism educators.

Jim Boren, executive editor and vice president of The Fresno Bee, gave the keynote speech on “Journalism in the 21st century and your role in it.”

“The primary purpose is to refocus students on the importance of journalistic writing and media literacy as well as giving them a rare chance to meet with professional journalists and college professors,” said Dympna Ugwu-Oju, journalism instructor at Fresno City and adviser to college newspaper, The Rampage.

Besides The Bee, Cal Press and the Journalism Education Association of Northern California were sponsors.
