Inmate from Fresno County killed in prison attack

An inmate from Fresno County who was serving a life sentence for murder is dead after he was assaulted by two other inmates, state prison officials said.

Isaiah Williams, 38, died at an outside hospital about an hour after he was attacked with inmate-made weapons on Tuesday at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.

Guards at the prison used irritating chemicals and fired one shot from a rifle to stop the assault.

Williams was serving a life sentence in the 1996 fatal shooting of 25-year-old Eric Reed Miller. Miller was found on the lawn of a home near Jackson and Grant avenues in Fresno. Williams was 18 at the time of the killing.

Prison officials named 51-year-old Andrew Berry and 53-year-old Rex Dickey, both from Los Angeles County, as suspects in the attack.

Both are serving life terms for murder – Dickey for a slaying when he was already behind bars for burglary.
