Man out on bail arrested in Fresno home invasion at motel room
Fresno police arrested a man out on bail on felony hit and run charges after he was identified as a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened Friday.
Cameron Woods, 23, was taken into custody along with David Newsome, 20, after a man from Oakland was robbed Friday at a motel in the 3700 block of Blackstone Avenue. Woods was already facing charges in a 2014 collision in which an SUV carrying eight children was hit by a speeding car at California and Fruit avenues, sending children flying from the vehicle.
Sgt. Ignacio Ruiz said Friday’s incident took place after the male victim reported picking up a known female acquaintance and checking into the motel room. While he was showering, he caught the woman going through his backpack. The woman then left the room.
That’s when two male suspects with shirts covering their faces rushed in. One pointed a handgun at the victim, who tried to run out the door. He was grabbed by his hair and pulled back inside, where he was robbed of $5,000 in cash and jewelry. The suspects fled in a car, but not before witnesses recorded the license plate number.
About 12 hours later, police arrested Woods and Newsome in the 3800 block of West Shields Avenue on charges of home invasion robbery. Woods was also booked for committing a felony while on bail. A woman identified as Melissa Vongphakdy, 25, remains at large.
