Fresno police SWAT team surrounds home; nearby schools locked down

Three Fresno Unified schools were locked down Monday after the Fresno Police Department SWAT team surrounded a house in central Fresno for a warrant search.

Police used an armored vehicle and a helicopter to detain several people in the action at Fresno Street and White Avenue in an hours-long action that began about 7 a.m. The schools that were shut down were Tehipite Middle School and Yokomi and Webster elementary schools. The schools were then reopened a short while later.

Southbound Fresno Street was blocked north of Belmont while the SWAT response occurred.

Police did not provide details about the action, in which a door was reportedly broken down and officers used tear gas to force occupants to comply with orders to exit the home.
