Fresno man fatally shot as he warmed up his car is identified

The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was shot to death early Monday as he walked out to warm up his car at Ranchwood Condos in southeast Fresno. He is Rodney Stennis, 45, of Fresno.

Stennis was shot multiple times by a man with a sawed-off rifle, Fresno police said. The shooting happened on East Lane Avenue, east of Chestnut Avenue.

Lt. Joe Gomez said the crime occurred a short time after the victim walked out to warm up his car. He was attacked by the gunman moments later and was found dead near the front of the unit where he lived.

Police don’t know if a robbery was involved or whether the victim was chased by the killer. The suspect was identified as a young, Hispanic male about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and wearing a gray hoodie and black pants.
