Central Fresno traffic stop leads to jail for gang member, police say
A traffic stop for a burned-out headlight and expired registration tags on April 16 in central Fresno led to an arrest for a loaded handgun, Fresno police said.
Gabriel Olivares, 25, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm in a vehicle, possessing a firearm as a felon, possessing a firearm as a gang member and other offenses, Fresno police said.
Olivares was driving near Vagedes and Olive avenues when he was pulled over around 4:40 a.m. for one of his front headlights being out and his registration tags being expired, Fresno police said. He gave officers a false name but officers identified him as Olivares and found he was on parole with an extensive criminal record.
Olivares claimed to be an active member of the Bulldog gang, Fresno police said.
While conducting a parole search of the vehicle, officers located a a .22-caliber handgun under the driver seat, Fresno police said. The weapon had eight live rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.
He was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
