Corcoran murder tied to gangs, police say

A man driving a vehicle was shot and killed in what appears to be a gang-related murder, Corcoran police said Tuesday.

About 8 p.m. Monday, police went to the area of Chittenden and Sherman avenues for a report that a man had been shot.

Gustavo Ortega, 39, was shot while driving a vehicle that came to rest in the front yard of a house in the 1300 block of Chittenden Avenue, police said.

Officers administered CPR until paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

Police learned that shots had been fired two blocks away near Bainum Avenue and are trying to learn if that is where Ortega was shot.

A vehicle involved in the shots-fired incident was described as a dark-colored passenger car.

Police and the Kings County Gang Task Force are following up on leads. Anyone with information should contact Corcoran police at 559-992-5151 or the confidential crime line at 559-992-3591.
