Assault rifle seized after driver pulled over by Fresno police

Police confiscated an assault rifle and a lever-action .30-30 rifle rifle early Thursday morning after stopping a driver for driving under the influence in southeast Fresno, Sgt. Tony Bustos reported.

The incident took place about 2 a.m. near American and Clovis avenues. Thanath Vongkhounthong, 45, also was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Vongkhounthong, who is prohibited from possessing firearms because he is a convicted felon, was booked on weapons charges as well as driving under the influence.
