A Tower District building was riddled with gunfire early Wednesday after a large disturbance, Fresno police reported.

The shooting erupted about 12:30 a.m. near the closed The Million Elephant restaurant at Fulton Street and Olive Avenue, according to a police report.

No one was hit by bullets, although a security guard was apparently hit by shards of glass when a bullet struck a window. The police Shot Spotter system reported 14 rounds were fired in the area and officers found a corresponding number of 9 mm shell casings in the parking lot of Chicken Pie Shop across Olive Avenue.

Officers went to investigate a report that about 30 people were fighting and found a crowd dispersing. They were told a man was wounded. When officers administered first aid to the guard, they determined he had not been struck by a bullet. According to a Facebook page for The Million Elephant, the business was closed due to a family emergency in November; the business has a large patio next to a nearby nightclub.

The police report says officers saw a black Chevrolet Malibu nearby and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped away. After stopping a short time later, officers arrested Xavier Gladney, 29, on charges of felony evasion. Witnesses reported Gladney was at the scene but he was not identified as the gunman. He told officers he fled because he is on probation and did not want to return to jail.
