Visalia man charged with attempted murder in gang-related shooting

A 19-year-old Visalia man was charged Monday with attempted murder in a February gang-related shooting after he was already booked on a weapons charge, police said.

Visalia police responded on Feb. 28 to the Riverway Sports Park, just north of Dinuba Boulevard and Riggin Avenue, around 3:30 p.m. for a shooting, Sgt. Damon Maurice said. Officers were told that an argument occurred between the victim and the suspect who was inside a vehicle.

The suspect pulled a handgun during the dispute and fired at the victim before driving off, Maurice said. No one was injured during the shooting. The shooting appeared to be gang-related.

Police investigators identified Samuel Cerda, 19, as the shooter, Maurice said. Cerda was arrested March 12 for suspected firearm possession and questioned about the shooting on Monday, when the attempted homicide charge was added.

Anyone with information on the ongoing investigation is asked to call detective James Cummings at 559-713-4722.
