Two men killed in separate Fresno-area hit-and-runs identified

Two men killed in separate hit-and-run accidents on Fresno County highways over the weekend have been identified.

The man killed late Friday night walking across Highway 180 west of Kerman has been identified as Darren Garza, 41, of Fresno.

Garza was crossing the highway just west of Napa Avenue about 11:20 p.m. when he was struck by a 1996 Ford SUV traveling east at 55 to 60 mph, the California Highway Patrol said.

He was declared dead at the scene after officers could not revive him, the CHP said.

The driver fled but was later arrested, the CHP said. Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Uziel Romero-Gonzalez, 28, of Fresno, was booked into the Fresno County Jail for suspected hit-and-run resulting in a death or injury, according to jail records.

Early Sunday, a man was killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 99 in downtown Fresno, CHP said.

Although originally identified as being from Oceanside, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has identified him as Earl Jones, 41, of Fowler.

He was hit by an unknown vehicle after walking onto the northbound lanes of the highway between Fresno and Tuolumne streets around 2:45 a.m., CHP said. He died at the scene.

Anyone with information on Jones’ death is asked to call the Fresno CHP office at 559-441-5441.

Correction: The CHP has corrected information it originally released concerning the incident that killed Earl Jones. He was killed on northbound Highway 99 in Fowler at 2:45 a.m. on March 6. The CHP continues to seek witnesses to that hit and run. Anyone with information can call 559-441-5441.
