A Visalia husband and wife have been indicted for murder in the death of their 3-month-old child, the Tulare County district attorney said Monday.

Angela Jimenez-Ramirez, 29, and Daniel Ramirez, 29, were arrested Friday at their home in Visalia and arraigned the same day.

On Oct. 12, 2014, both parents brought the injured child to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. The injuries were so severe the child was immediately airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera County and placed on life support, Visalia police said.

The child died four days later. The child’s name and gender have not been released and the cause of death was not announced.

Last October, after being interviewed at the Visalia Police Department, both parents were arrested on suspicion of murder but were released from jail when the District Attorney’s Office did not file charges.

The case needed more investigation, the District Attorney’s Office said at the time.

Now the parents have been indicted by a grand jury.

Both are charged with one count of murder and one felony count of child abuse with the special allegations of willful harm or injury resulting in death and great bodily injury of a child under 5.

The murder charges carry punishment of 15 or 25 years to life in prison, plus 10 to 12 years in prison if found guilty of the special allegations.

Additionally, the child’s mother is charged with one felony count of assault on a child causing death. If found guilty, she would face 25 years to life in prison, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Both pleaded not guilty, were assigned attorneys and bail was set at $2 million each.

The next court appearance for the couple is scheduled for Thursday in Department 6 of the Tulare County Superior Court.
