Kings County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who reportedly aimed an AR-15 rifle equipped with a laser sight at a sheriff’s office airplane early Tuesday.

Eddie Albert Ignacio, 29, was booked on charges being a felon in possession of a firearm and discharging a laser at an aircraft when he was booked into Kings County Jail. The incident occurred about 1 a.m. near Santa Rosa Rancheria.

A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office said the Skyking 1 aircraft was sent to the rancheria to check a report of shots fired near a slough. The plane’s crew alerted deputies after a red laser was pointed at the plane. Deputies were directed to a Dodge pickup in the 16400 block of Jeff Road.

Deputies tried to make a traffic stop at Jeff Road and Thomas Road, but the truck reportedly drove at a patrol vehicle, nearly striking it. The truck then became stuck in the 16900 block of South Road and the driver ran. Ignacio was arrested nearby.

Deputies recovered the rifle and two 30-round magazines, one of which was empty.

In October, a Clovis man was sentenced to five years in prison by a federal judge for pointing a laser at an aircraft.
