Fresno police: Woman’s ex runs over her new boyfriend

A Fresno man was in critical condition Friday after he was run over by his girlfriend’s former suitor in northwest Fresno, police reported.

Police are searching for the suspected assailant, identified as Anthony Rangel, 23, after the assault at Logan Park, near Barstow and Marks avenues, which occurred about 10 a.m.

Lt. Joe Gomez said officers were sent there to check on a collision involving a pedestrian and found a 28-year-old man in the parking lot bleeding from his head, arms and torso.

They discovered the victim was with his 22-year-old girlfriend in the park when the suspect drove by. The woman told officers Rangel pointed at them and drove his silver Honda into the lot. The male victim stepped out of a pickup truck, walked into the lot and looked at the Honda.

Rangel reportedly accelerated and struck the victim with the front of the car.

The victim was thrown onto the front of the Honda, against the windshield, where he remained as Rangel continued to drive for several yards. The victim then fell off and landed in the parking lot.

Rangel turned around on the road outside the park, then returned to the lot. He drove past the victim and fled.

The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with a broken leg, head injuries, abrasions to his head and torso and a back injury. Gomez said the injuries are not life-threatening.

Rangel is wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and violating a restraining order that prohibited him from any contact with the woman.

Anyone with information about Rangel’s location is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
