Police: Felon arrested with firearm near downtown Fresno

A Fresno gang member on probation was arrested Wednesday night near downtown Fresno on charges of being a felon in possession of a handgun, police reported.

A police spokesman said Ruben Walker, 29, was detained near Fresno Street and Belmont Avenue about 10:30 p.m. by officers responding to a disturbance involving a man with a gun.

The spokesman said Walker was seen discarding an object when he saw officers, who recovered a .22 caliber pistol. The firearm was not registered and officers were working to determine its origin.
