Woman, 77, shot in Calwa, dies of injuries

A 77-year-old woman who was shot Jan. 11 in Calwa died of her injuries Monday night, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Maria Socorro Lopez and her son, Jesus Castor, 52, were shot while they were walking to a store in Calwa. Castor died the same night.

The sheriff’s office said Castor, Lopez and an 18-year-old relative were in the 2400 block of South Tenth Street about 2 a.m. when they crossed paths with four or five men. One of the men fired multiple shots at the three, striking Castor and his mother. The 18-year-old ran to a nearby home told residents to call 911.

The death of Lopez was the sixth homicide and the third double homicide in Fresno County this year. There were nine homicides in the county in 2015. Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
