A 14-year-old boy who police say brandished a handgun outside Edison High School Tuesday afternoon was taken into custody by officers at a nearby strip mall.

Sgt. Walter Boston said officers received an anonymous report just before 3 p.m. that the boy, who was not a student at the school, was armed with the handgun just outside the school in the 500 block of East California Avenue. School resources officers directed the department’s helicopter to the boy, who was tracked to a strip mall at Martin Luther King Boulevard and California. As officers arrived, the boy ran into a laundry, where a video camera captured him putting the revolver in a dryer. Boston said another person took the weapon out of the dryer and placed it in the bed of his pickup and then notified officers of its location, where it was recovered.

The juvenile was booked into juvenile hall on multiple charges, including having a firearm at or near a school.
