Two women are in critical care after being shot in a neighborhood west of Highway 99 in Fresno.

After reports of gunfire, Fresno Police found two victims near Lodi and Weldon avenues around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victims, two African-American women, were taken to Community Regional Medical Center with gunshot wounds.

“They’re both in critical but stable condition,” Lt. Mindy Casto said. At least one of the victims underwent surgery around 11 p.m.

The suspect is described as an Asian man, small in stature, and left the scene after the shooting.

“Multiple vehicles, in the chaos and confusion after the shooting, left the scene so we’re trying to sort that out and determine if any of those belong to the suspect,” Casto said.

The shooting occurred after an argument at a barbecue held at the residence of one of the victims. Those gathered at the barbecue went out onto the street where neighbors got involved and shots were fired, Casto said.

Officers are not sure whether the victims and shooter knew each other.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
