A convicted felon was arrested on Thursday in northeast Fresno for allegedly possessing a firearm after someone fired a gun into the air early New Year’s Day, police said.

Police responded to an apartment in the area of Shaw Avenue and Ninth Street, near Fresno State, around 1:35 a.m. on New Year’s Day after a witness reported seeing a man fire a handgun into the air from the patio of his apartment, Sgt. Doug Goertzen said. Officers tried to speak to the apartment occupants, but they refused to answer the door.

Officers returned to the same apartment around 9:30 p.m. Thursday with a search warrant and detained Sedrich Lynch, 35, of Fresno.

A Bersa 9 mm handgun was found in the glove box of Lynch’s vehicle, Goertzen said. His involvement in the New Year’s Day shooting is under investigation.

Lynch was found to be a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm, Goertzen said. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail for alleged firearms possession charges.
