Phone scam hits Fresno County Sheriff’s Office

A phone scam where the caller falsely claims to be a Fresno County sheriff’s deputy has resurfaced, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The caller gives a false badge number, claims the person has an active warrant for failure to appear in court and demands that they meet in person to pay the fine to avoid going to jail.

The attempts to scam have gone unsuccessful, but reports of the phone scam continue to arise.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office never makes solicitations for money or asks for the payment of fines over the phone, said sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti.

Anyone who receives a call like this is encouraged to write down information like the caller’s name or phone number and report it to authorities.
