Woman dead, man detained after southeast Fresno shooting

A woman is dead and a man has been detained after he was taken to a hospital following a shooting Monday morning in the Sunnyside area of southeast Fresno, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting happened about 7 a.m. on the 1000 block of Rogers Lane, in an unincorporated area just west of Clovis Avenue and just south of Kings Canyon Road. Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti said deputies rushed to the area after receiving a call that one person was dead and the caller was going to kill himself.

As deputies arrived, they heard a gunshot in the home, so they forced their way inside. They found a woman dead from a gunshot wound.

The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Botti said it appeared the woman was not killed by the gunshot deputies heard when they arrived.

The name of the woman and the man have not been released, but Botti said the two knew one another and the crime was not related to a break-in or a home invasion.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified said the man was a long-time resident of the neighborhood.
