Valley holiday DUI crackdown nets 62

Law enforcement officers in Fresno and Madera counties arrested 62 people on DUI charges during the Winter Holiday DUI Mobilization campaign from midnight Dec. 18 through midnight Saturday, according to provisional numbers provided by the Avoid the 21 campaign.

Multiple DUI/drivers license checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols will continue to operate over the next several days as part of the 17-day holiday mobilization through Jan. 4, the campaign said. All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting drunken drivers during their normal shifts.

The Avoid the 21 campaign represents officers from 21 law enforcement agencies in the two-county area and is part of a statewide campaign.

In a separate effort in Visalia, police arrested six people as part of a warrant sweep on Sunday to catch suspects with outstanding felony and misdemeanor traffic warrants connected to a DUI.
