Hour-long stand-off ends in arrest after Coalinga man threatens to kill himself

A domestic dispute in Coalinga ended in arrest Thursday after a man threatened to harm himself, barricading himself in his home for over an hour until police were able to make an arrest.

Officers responded around 11 a.m. to the 100 block of Tyler Street to reports of a man destroying property at the residence. After officers calmed the man down, the female resident and her children left the house.

Officers then returned an hour later to the home to reports that the man had gotten two knives and was holding them to his neck. Mental Health Staff, the California Highway Patrol and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department negotiated with the man for over an hour, during which the man started a fire in the home, yelling at officers to shoot him. When he left the house later, officers detained him.

The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment and mental evaluation.
