Suspect caught after man severely beaten in Tower District attack

A 39-year-old man is in critical condition after he was struck on the head with a stick during an early morning Tower District assault, police report. A suspect was later caught.

About 5:30 a.m., officers went to a car wash at Palm and Olive avenues, where the victim was lying on the ground, police Lt. Joe Gomez said. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center.

About 12 hours later, police arrested Kirk Douglas Voigt, 30, at a laundromat on Palm and Harrison avenues, less than two blocks from the crime scene.

Voigt confessed and was booked into Fresno County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police say the victim may not survive.
