The Skywatch helicopter crew helped Fresno police safely end the chase of a motorcycle rider early Friday morning.

Sgt. Doug Goertzen with the police Violent Crime Impact Team said officers first spotted the motorcycle just before 1 a.m. in the area of Millbrook and Ashlan avenues and determined it was stolen. The rider, later identified as 28-year-old Kevin Martin, stopped and let a passenger off then sped away.

Sgt. Larry Hustedde, supervisor of the police air support unit, said the helicopter joined the chase as officers in vehicles called off their chase because Martin was running red lights at high speeds.

Skywatch tracked the motorcycle by its taillights, catching up near Cedar and Tulare avenues, where the helicopter crew was able to shine its Nightsun spotlight on Martin. Moments later, he stopped, got off the motorcycle and stood with his hands in the air waiting to be arrested.

Martin was booked into the Fresno County Jail for felony evading police, riding a stolen motorcycle and possession of methamphetamine.
