Mammoth Lakes doctor indicted for taking Native American cultural artifacts

A Mammoth Lakes doctor faces a 21-count indictment in Fresno federal court for removing Native American cultural artifacts from public lands.

According to the indictment, Jonathan Cornelius Bourne, 59, found the relics, some more than 100 years old, in Death Valley National Park, Inyo National Forest and Sierra National Forest.

Bourne pleaded not guilty to the charges and he is scheduled for his next court hearing on Dec. 7. If convicted, he faces a maximum statutory penalty of 98 years in prison and a $2,030,000 fine.
